P3 ULg – University of Liege, Department of Sport and Rehabilitation Sciences (Sport pedagogy unit) – Belgium

Located in the heart of Europe, where the Euregio-Meuse-Rhine axes converge, the University of Liège (ULg) is one of the three main and complete Universities of the French speaking Community of Belgium. One of the University of Liege’s main priorities is to open itself to the world. This determination is evident in a series of concrete initiatives which have brought together more than 600 partners throughout the World (250 in Europe). There is a large array of programs (38 bachelors and 193 masters; 68 complementary degrees). If several resources are offered to students in the perspective of enhancing the teaching mission of the university, research is definitely one of the priorities of the institution that gather 471 research units in all domains, 20 interdisciplinary research centres, 1,500 researchers under contract and 100 of them in mobility, €75 millions of public grants (competitive research), €50 millions of private grants (companies/industries), 1,200 research contracts (ULg conducts many programmes in the EU FP6 and FP7).ULg was ranked 201st worldwide in the 2007 Time Higher Education, 9th in the 2008 top-10 international ranking of “The Scientist for post-docs” and has been awarded the ECTS and DS Labels since 2009 renewed until this year. ULg is a member of the European EURAXESS (European Research Area – Mobility of Researcher) and has established the Centre of Mobility of the University of Liege who helps doctoral students dealing with practical aspects and has been rewarded the European Human Resources Strategy Label for researchers.
The Department of Sport and Rehabilitation Sciences belongs to the Medicine Faculty. It prepares both specialists in physiotherapy (400 students) and top level professionals for physical education and sports (PES) (200 students). Research of the scholars working on PES focus on sport pedagogy, early children motor education, methodology of training and sport physiology.
Background and experience:
The University of Liege hosts 22,000 students, which 22% are foreign (coming from 122 other countries). Moreover, ULg has concluded more than 1300 international agreements in the framework of Erasmus program as well as worldwide. It takes part in the 8 Erasmus Mundus programs: 6 joint masters among which Liège University coordinates 2 masters (EMSHIP and EMERALD) and 2 Joint Doctorates. ULg also takes part in 12 editions of Erasmus Mundus Partnerships, 5 KA2 strategic partnerships (1 as coordinator). in several Tempus projects, in 2 running capacity building projects and in one “Sport not for profit European Sport events”. In the field of research, ULg conducts 106 projects FP7 and 25 in H2020.
Nowadays, 3,300 scholars are involved in research and teaching activities in nine faculties (Philosophy and Letters, Law & Political Sciences, Sciences, Medicine, Applied sciences, Veterinary medicine, Psychology and Education sciences, Agronomy, Architecture), in one institute (Human and social sciences) and in one school (Business).
