Profile:
With a teaching staff of about 2,200 tenured professors, approximately 64,000 students, 8 faculties and 2 schools, the University of Milan (UMIL) is the largest university in Lombardy.
Milan is the main town of Lombardy, one of the most dynamic and international regions in the European Union, a leader in the national economy that stands at the Italian forefront of research and development investments as well as commitment for technological innovation.

The Department of Cultural Heritage and Environment (BAC) is engaged in research and educational studies in the fields of cultural and environmental heritage, and human related behaviours. The research is carried on with inter-disciplinary and international cooperation. The educational offer is composed by six paths (2 bachelor’s degrees and 4 master degrees), two postgraduate schools and one Ph.D.
In the last two years, the research has been carried out in four different sessions:
• Archaeology, where studies are focused on the Italian historical finds;
• Art, strictly connected to the historical, geographical and cultural context, where the research is often developed through national and international projects;
• Geography, Anthropology, Psychology developing three main research areas: Human Geography, Cultural and social Anthropology, Social, Environmental and Cultural Psychology;
• Music and Performance, where the studies are linked to the historical and critical aspects, with a particular attention to the inter-disciplinary approach and the promotion of musical heritage.

The second department involved, the Department of Biomedical Sciences for Health (BSH) is the point of reference for the faculty of Exercise and Sport Sciences, and it is linked to other 24 inter-departmental courses, such as Medicine, Dietetics, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Techniques, confirming its inter-disciplinary nature. It promotes and coordinates activities of basic research, epidemiology, health promotion, clinical and forensic respectively targeted to the advancement of scientific knowledge.
The department is internationally oriented and promotes Erasmus exchanges for students and hosts visiting professors in Milan. In particular, it organises a Master Program course on preventive medicine and hygiene with the University of Salzburg (Austria).

Furthermore, the Department of Medical Biotechnology and Translational Medicine is involved in the project through of the contribution of Mr Enzo Nisoli, eminent expert in the field of obesity. Matching interests and expertise in molecular and cellular sciences, sciences applied to medicine and clinical sciences, this dept. gathers professors and researchers of scientific areas related to basic research in the field of biophysics, molecular and cellular biology, research applied to medicine, diagnostics, and clinical and surgical medicine, with the purpose to promote and coordinate translational and multidisciplinary research activities.

Background and experience:
In the last six years, thanks to the professors’ engagement, the BAC Dept. has developed several applied researches supported by national and international funds. After receiving grants from the Italian Ministry, the Lombardy Region, the Milan Province and private foundations, the Dept. benefited of a European grant, thanks to the project “Senses”, submitted by Ms Mazzocut-Mis to the EU “Creative Europe” Program (see below Part D 3 Other EU grants). The Dept. internationalization is based on several Erasmus mobility grants and its professors organize several international congresses and conventions, aiming at promoting the exchange of scientific results among European colleagues.

The research activity of the BSH Dept. is supported by several projects funded by the Italian Ministry for Health, Lombardy Region, Cariplo Foundation, the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research. Professors and researchers of this Dept. have gained a strong experience in the international scientific research, carried out in cooperation with many public and private Italian and international organisations.
